A chat with Segun Sowunmi

In this captivating episode of the Mic on Podcast, the host Seun Okinbaloye had a chat with Otunba Segun Sowunmi, a prominent member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)
They delved into Nigeria’s current political scene, highlighting key challenges facing the nation.

The PDP chieftain expressed concerns about the deep divisions among tribes, criticizing the current government’s direction. “2023 has shown that the Nigerian nation is in a fix. We have found ourselves in a situation where the tribes are so divided. We have seen the direction of their (APC) government is at best sad.” He says.

Regarding the 2027 elections, Sowunmi urged against premature assumptions about potential candidates. He emphasized the need for careful consideration when discussing political figures like President Bola Tinubu and the PDP Presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar.

He said, “2027 elections, God sparing our lives, is still very far down the road. It is too early for anybody to say they are running for anything. Can you rule Bola Tinubu out for a 2nd term? If you cannot rule Bola Tinubu out, then, obviously, you have to look at it properly and say, Atiku, has the energy and still has the appetite.”

Expressing his ambition and confidence in contributing to the PDP, Sowunmi said the party has never had someone from the southwest as its National Chairman.

Sowunmi said he’s started consulting with key players in the party and the responses have been quite encouraging. He is eyeing the party’s number one position and already making the necessary moves. Responding to questions on his chances of getting the backing of his party men and women he said “The southwest has been in this party for 25 years and never had an opportunity to be National Chairman. We (southwest) are the only ones that never had National Chairman. North Central to be fair, has even had more than a fair share of having the National Chairman. I am the only order that can help them (PDP) for now.”
