Labour Party chieftain, Barr. Kenneth Okonkwo, recently addressed rumours stemming from his open letter regarding his alleged departure from the party and severing ties with his principal and the 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, during an episode of the Mic on Podcast with Seun Okinbaloye.
Okonkwo expressed dissatisfaction with Obi’s leadership, stating,
“I have been waiting for the Labour Party to be consolidated through decisive leadership by my principal, Peter Obi, but the delay is bringing anarchy to the Labour Party.”
While emphasizing his respect for Obi, Okonkwo highlighted their differing temperaments and his preference for a more assertive leadership approach, stressing the importance of a consolidated and firm resolution to restructure the Labour Party ahead of future elections.
“I simply do not agree with the calm way Peter Obi does things. He wants to be too sweet or nice for everybody, and that’s why they are taking advantage of him. That’s why I said I am no longer speaking for him as a spokesperson.”
Okonkwo also underscored the significance of peaceful resistance in Nigeria, criticizing the current administration’s contradictory stance on protests. “This government should repent and seek God’s forgiveness. They say they don’t believe in protest but are sponsoring protests against protest. This is a hypocritical government.”
Reflecting on his political journey, Okonkwo reiterated his commitment to seeking a new political direction, rejecting any return to the APC, and concluded by urging a change in leadership to address Nigeria’s pressing challenges.
“As far as the 2023 election is concerned, Peter Obi is still 100% better than Atiku Abubakar and Bola Tinubu, but going forward, Atiku, Obi, and Tinubu should step aside.”
