In a recent episode of the Mic on Podcast with Seun Okinbaloye, Seyi Law, a prominent supporter of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), expressed solid confidence in Tinubu’s ability to steer Nigeria through its current challenges. Despite growing protests against bad governance, Seyi Law stated, “I absolutely don’t have a change of mind towards President Bola Tinubu’s government. He has what it takes to deliver Nigeria.”
Seyi Law, who also serves as the Senior Special Adviser (SSA) on Entertainment to the Ondo State Governor, acknowledged the legitimacy of the protests but cautioned against misdirected efforts,
“I haven’t seen the narrative that those who are protesting are against the government and want to bring it down. But those who have hijacked the protest; the genuine cries of Nigerians to end hunger are those that I am against.”
While he voiced concerns about the effectiveness of the president’s administration, suggesting that Tinubu might be hindered by the lack of competence within his own cabinet, Seyi therefore emphasized the urgency of ensuring that Nigerians, particularly those at the grassroots level, are fully informed about the government’s policies.
“I believe it is very urgent and that drastic actions have to be taken for people to know what the presidency is doing. The media aides should put some of the government’s policies that are sounding ambiguous into videos or voices in different languages so that people at the grassroots can listen to them.”
On the other hand, Segun Sowunmi, a chieftain of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), offered a critical perspective on Tinubu’s administration. While he commended the president for following through on some of his promises, he criticized the implementation strategies, particularly in addressing the effects of fuel subsidy removal, “The implementation strategy of the ideas on cushioning the effect of fuel subsidy removal is not correct. President Bola Tinubu should be in a hurry to know that there’s a need to cushion the effect on the people, that the devaluation of the Naira has not helped anybody, and the increase in the cost of electricity tariff has not helped manufacturers.”
Meanwhile, Sowunmi also expressed concerns about the effectiveness of Tinubu’s cabinet, echoing the sentiment that some appointees lack the capacity to fulfill their roles, “There is a lacuna between what the president thinks he’s doing for the people and what is really hitting the people. He also has the misfortune of having appointees who have been called upon to come and work, and therefore they take it for granted; the energies that those who worked very hard (for him) to win election have put in.”
While he questioned why the public should be expected to show patience after nearly nine years of the ruling party being in power, Mr. Sowunmi, however, called for more decisive actions from the presidency with emphasis on the urgency of delivering tangible improvements to the Nigerian people,
“If in ten months’ time, clear, relatable, accessible evidence that people are now getting quality services is not on the table, the president can forget about it; it will be over.
