A chat with Deji Adeyanju

In this edition of The Mic on Podcast with Seun Okinbaloye, human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju voiced his concerns over the government’s handling of the #EndBadGovernance protests. He criticized the government’s harsh response to peaceful demonstrators, stating, “There was no justification whatsoever for the government to have clamped down on the #EndBadGovernance protesters in the manner they did.”

Adeyanju also criticized President Bola Tinubu, accusing him of exhibiting authoritarian tendencies that seem to surpass those of past military regimes.

He gave a thumbs down to the government’s severe actions, including the arrest of over 2,000 protesters. “It now appears to me that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu may as well be called a ‘General.’ He is even exceeding the military by accusing the protesters of treason and treasonable felony.”

On the issue of governance, Adeyanju condemned Tinubu’s economic policies, particularly in relation to the fuel crisis, questioning the president’s capability to manage the oil sector. He suggested that Tinubu’s approach has been largely ineffective in addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges.

“The President should resign as Minister of Petroleum because he has no idea what’s going on there. He should appoint a competent person to handle the ministry.”

Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, Adeyanju called for unity among the opposition. He warned that time is of the essence, hinting at possible mergers, especially between the Labour Party, and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). “The time for the opposition to come together to [defeat Bola Tinubu in 2027] is now. They should not delay or allow personal egos to dictate the nature of their discussions.”
