Nigeria has faced numerous challenges throughout its history. From political instability to economic hardship, the country has been through a lot. In recent times, there have been incessant cases of kidnapping and insecurity, the fall of the Naira in the parallel market, and inflation thereby increasing extreme poverty amongst the populace.
Whether Nigeria is heading in the right direction is the focus of this episode of the podcast, giving listeners on different platforms to air their views.
In this engaging episode of the Mic On podcast, Rights Activist Prof. Chidi Odinkalu highlights the consequences of Nigerians wanting change without first asking what kind of change they desire. In his words,
“Nigeria got what Buhari promised, Buhari didn’t promise change that will make things better, he said he would give us change and he brought change. on the eve of Buhari’s departure, Tinubu said it was my turn and his main campaign promise was, I will continue Buhari’s policies. he has delivered on both.”
Also speaking on the capacity of President Tinubu’s cabinet to take Nigeria out of the economic crisis, Prof. Chidi said “Look at that cabinet list, and tell me that you can count 40% that you think can battle Nigeria and succeed. what a man tells you on his campaign trail is different from what they tell you after the campaign. On the campaign trail, people were not willing to ask Tinubu questions and when he was asked questions, he passed the questions to other people so, there was no plan and it was very clear and it’s still very clear that there was no plan”.
Ultimately, while Nigeria has made progress in various aspects, there are still enormous challenges that need to be addressed to ease the suffering and hardship facing the nation. The country has the potential for growth and development, but it requires consistent and sustained efforts to ensure that it stays on the right track.
