State Of The Nation Conversation.

As President Bola Ahmed Tinubu marks one year in office, opinions on his performance are mixed. Nigerians are debating whether he has met their expectations. Key issues include his handling of the economy, the well-being of average and vulnerable Nigerians, achievements in infrastructure development, cabinet performance, the adoption of the old national anthem, and feedback from the opposition party.

To critically assess the president’s first year, Seun Okinbaloye on the Mic on Podcast engages Kassim Afegbua, a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress, and Yunusa Tanko, the Chief Spokesperson for the Obidatti Movement in the 2023 presidential election.

Kassim Afegbua affirmed his belief that President Bola Tinubu embodies the interests of most Nigerians, stating, “For me, President Bola Tinubu represents the aggregate interest of the majority of Nigerians.”

On the other hand, Yunusa Tanko, spokesperson for the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, expressed concerns about Tinubu’s administration, citing a lack of cohesive policy direction. He said, “There is no scorecard for me to assess (Tinubu’s government). It’s like you are picking and choosing what you want to do without a choreographed and arranged policy that you want to execute.”

Kassim called for a cabinet reshuffle, pointing to the need for more effective ministers. He asserted,

“This cabinet (under Tinubu’s administration) is not the best kind that Nigeria can get from a president. I would advocate that in this one year, he should fire some ministers who are not performing.”

Yunusa further accused the current government of using infrastructural projects as a cover for election fundraising. He claimed,

“The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project is a scam! It’s a scam (of the government) to enrich themselves and raise money to use for the (2027) elections.”
